About Us

Hula Vida was started by Kat and Amber of Kelowna, British Columbia. They bonded over their mutual love for hooping after meeting at a class at Studio X Fitness. After being frustrated with the lack of options when trying to buy hoops in Canada, they decided to start making their own. The name Hula Vida is inspired by the common Costa Rican saying ‘Pura Vida’ which means pure life.

I first fell in love with hooping after witnessing it for the first time at Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, BC. But it wasn't until a video by Katie Sunshine was shared on Facebook that I decided to buy my own hula hoop. I was immediately hooked. I love how there are absolutely no rules, and everyone has their own style. My favourite hoop is my 34" UV reactive lime green polypro, and my favourite song to hoop to is Lone Digger by Caravan Palace.

Several years ago I saw a new to me and totally different style of hula hooping at my first music festival here in the Okanagan. I started taking the first hoop classes I could find with my new self-decorated hoop and breaking down tricks I saw in videos online. I'm thankful for summer to be able to hoop outside but I'm also crazy lucky to have an amazing home where I can hoop inside. My go to hoop is my UV reactive neon orange polypro and I'm currently loving to have some electro-swing going while I use it!
